The First Defence: Using Strong Passwords

The most important part of account security, is having a strong password that would be hard to guess by anyone but yourself. Your birthday, favorite food, name, or anything else about you, are not good choices for a password. A good way to come up with a good strong password, is to use both capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and if possible, try to avoid using words. Remember, do your best to remember your password. However, if that is not possible, write it down on a piece of paper and put it somewhere you will remember. If you live with other people who might be interested in your account, it would be wise to hide the piece of paper. You could also add it to a .txt file via your computer for later use.

This website can randomly generate a good strong password for you!

Second: Passwords should be secret

NEVER EVER TELL ANYONE YOUR PASSWORD.

Do not share it with your best friend, boy friend, girl friend, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, ANYONE. As much as we hate to admit it, some relationships do end, and can end nasty. Your account could be on their hit list to get back at you.

As always: AN ADMIN WILL NEVER EVER ASK FOR YOUR PASSWORD.

Third: Linking Passwords

Do not use the same password for more than one account. This pertains to UIF, and of course includes social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc). Using the same password for various accounts can result in all of them getting stolen at the same time.

Forth: Security Questions

When using the forums, be sure to have security questions set. This could save your account if it has been stolen, or if you have forgotten your password.

MAKE SURE TO NEVER TELL ANYONE YOUR SECURITY QUESTIONS/ANSWERS.

Fifth: Virus/malware Protection

Whether we like it or not, getting your accounts stolen could be as simple as downloading the wrong mod.

Do not download anything from people you do not completely trust.

This includes: Mods, Pictures, Files, Songs, Videos, ANYTHING.

A good way to prevent yourself from getting a threatening virus, is to scan your computer regularly. I for instance, scan my computer for viruses once a week. If possible, scan your computer daily. Before you go to bed, school, work, right when you wake up, whenever. If you feel that you have a virus already, be sure to scan your computer and remove the infected file.

A good free anti-malware that I use and trust is:

To find a good anti-virus, feel free to use this list.

Sixth: Links
Beware of any suspicious links! Do to certain SMF features links can be hidden, for instance, the link below will guide you to uifserver.net despite the fact that it is a link to Google.

Example:
https://www.google.com/
A simple way to see where a link takes you to is hover your mouse over the link and the real URL should show somewhere in your browser.
Example:
Account Security. BiHQS1K
Clicking on any non-trusted links may result in unwanted cookies/viruses being downloaded to your computer.

Many browsers show a lock on the URL bar to symbolize if a website is safe and trusted!
Example:
Account Security. L4SVYml

Keep in mind:

Keeping your account secure is up to you.

If your account gets stolen, it is only your fault. The UIF/staff team can not be held responsible for it, and it is not their job to get your account back for you. The only thing the admin team can do in such a situation, is properly inform you on how to keep your account more secure. By all means, feel free to ask anyone on the staff team for help if you have any questions.

If you PM a A+6, and ask nicely, if they can help you, they may, but again, it is not their responsibility to get your account back for you, and to keep it secure.

As always, Have fun and stay safe!
